How to Measure Body Fat Percentage (Male) | Skinfold Caliper Testing Nursing Skill

How to measure body fat percentage at home using skinfold calipers for an adult male. Measuring body fat percentage is part of the anthropometric measurements (BMI, height, weight, etc.) that we assess as nurses.

To measure body fat percentage via the skinfold thickness measurement technique, you’ll need a pair of skinfold calipers. Here’s the one we demonstrated in the video (Amazon Affiliate Store Link): https://www.amazon.com/shop/registerednursern

There are different methods and body locations you can use to measure body fat percentage. In this video, we demonstrate how to measure body fat percentage using the triceps skinfold thickness measurement (1-site method), the 3-site Jackson/Pollock method (chest, abdomen, thigh), and the 7-site Jackson/Pollock method (triceps, abdomen, chest, thigh, suprailiac, subscapular, midaxillary) using the Sequoia TrimCal 4000 skinfold caliper.

Once you collect the skinfold measurements (in millimeters), you can plug your results into a reference chart or calculator, especially for home use. If you are collecting measurements as a part of an official nursing assessment, you’ll enter the measurements into the required fields on your software or chart.

In the video, we show a graphic comparing body fat percentages, as well as the body fat percentage scale for both men and women.

In the future, we’ll demonstrate how to measure body fat percentage on a female, so stay tuned.

This video shows Dr. Evan Matthews explaining how to perform a body composition assessment to estimate body fat percentage using skinfolds. This is a common field test used in fitness centers and with athletes and the general population. This video starts by going over general tips and guidelines, then moves to how to perform the most common seven sites, then how to use the skin fold measurements to calculate body fat percentage (the rest of the tissue is lean tissue mass).

Male Body Density Equation (ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription)

Body Density = 1.112 – (0.00043499 x sum of skinfolds) +
(0.00000055 x square of the sum of skinfold sites) – (0.00028826 x age)

Female Body Density Equation (ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription)

Body Density = 1.097 – (0.00046971 x sum of skinfolds) +
(0.00000056 x square of the sum of skinfold sites) – (0.00012828 x age)

Siri Equation to go from body density to body fat percentage

Total Body Fat % = (495 / Body Density) – 450
